A diet to control cholesterol should be very low on fat from meat and dairy sources and high in fiber from fruits and vegetables. (But avoid certain foods in this category; avocado and cashew nuts are high in fat.) Avoid butter and regular margarine, which contains trans-fatty acids. Use olive oil and canola oil sparingly. A new spread called Benecol helps control cholesterol; a similar product is called Take Control. You can eat nonfat dairly products like nonfat yogurt and nonfat cheeses. It is very important to get enough exercise, which helps lower cholesterol- at least 20 minutes to 1/2 hour a day.
