                        Hi:  My daughter had hip surgery when she was about 15 months.  She was in a body cast from her chest to her toes.  By the time you read this e-mail, you will probably know most of what I got to say.  Car safety is a fun one.  A kid in a body cast will not fit in a car seat.  We just proped her up in the car and fastened a seat belt around her.  We were stopped by a police once.  We had a blanket over her body cast.  The police officer was going to cite us until be saw the body cast.  Keeping the cast clean was a nightmare.  We had to stuff a diamper in the hole of the cast.  Not everything was caught.  We were constantly cleaning.  The child will learn to entertain themselves.  After a while, our daughter was able to track her self around.  Her arms became very strong.  Our daughter is now able to sit still and be quiet for long periods of time.  I think being in the body cast has something to do with that.  Just be patient.
